Toy Story Cake

I almost forgot to post about this fun cake! Have you seen Toy Story? I might be the only who hasn't seen that popular movie, but I recognize the characters. Well, I had to create a cake with this theme so my I rented the movie for my daugther (and me).

The cake is 'marbled' with buttercream in a two tone yellow/white color. It is the first time I do this and it turned out great. Inside the cake we have a Tres Leches cake and no filling. The delicate consistency of this cake doesn't allow for fillings otherwise it might colapse. Our Tres Leches cake is typically soaked with a delicious mix of milks and sometimes coconut syrup for extra flavor.

Here's Bullseye (in chocolate), Woody's trusty steed.

A little three eyed green alien also made from chocolate.

And here we got Woody (an old-fashion pull-string stuffed cowboy doll), Buzz Lightyear (space ranger from star command), and the signature movie logo.

The movie was very funny and I still need to rent Toy Story 2 so we can be ready for Toy Story 3 later this year.

Chocolate Jewerly Cases

Chocolate used to be my specialty many (maaaany) years ago when I had my business in México. Making these following jewerly cases brought back memories.

I simply loooove working with chocolate! Many of these jewerly cases were going to special teachers and students of an elementary school as a Valentine's Day present.

You might see on the top left corner how we packaged them. They were so cute and heavy. Each confection weighter .75 lbs. Some of them had chocolates and other ones had candy.

Chocolate Torte

This was an odd, but cute request. There's a story behind it!

I don't know if it's right to tell you the story... but,

the guy that the cake is for has been in the hospital for a long time. Something about "milking the cow" (?).

Anyway, we have a decadent chocolate torte and in between each layer we have chocolate ganache. The milk truck is made out of chocolate and the adorable cow is fondant.

Is she adorable or what?

Teddy Bear Shower Cake

The next cake was made for a baby shower. The couple knew they were expecting a boy and I love teddy bears so I decided to make it my focal point on the cake.

The blue teddy bear and the presents are made out of fondant. Inside the cake is chocolate butter cake and vanilla cake. For the filling we have a strawberry buttercream with chunks of stawberry.

Here's the whole cake. We dropped off the cake at Granite City restaurant.

Dora Over The Rainbow

Here's another Dora cake. I love making these type of cakes because they usually have lots of color. The cake is for a pretty girl turning 3 years old.

Inside the cake we have two layers of butter chocolate cake and one layer of vanilla cake sandwished with buttercream frosting and covered with our home made fondant.

The rainbow, clouds and stars were made with fondant a couple of days before delivering the cake. The little dora is a toy and that was our present to our friends' daughter, Kira.

Rose Flower Cake

Today we have a sweet light pink cake for a young girl turning 8 years old. The cake is made from a special recipe because Ellie, the birthday girl, required a cake made with no eggs. The cake is chocolate with vanilla buttercream frosting and covered in our home made fondant.

We also made personalized eggless cookies for her and we covered them with royal icing.

Cookies, Cookies and More Cookies!

There's this sweet lady named Shelley who works at Costco. She loves my daughter Lillie and always draws pretty smiley faces on our receipts (between us, if someone else is at the exit and draws her a smiley face on the receipt, she will run to Shelley at the entrance to get a 'better' smiley face). Lillie loves her a lot and whenever we bake, she makes sure that we bake extra to take a treat over to her.

Anyway, Shelley ordered cookies for some family members celebrating birthdays. Here's what we made for them.

These vanilla sugar shoes were going to Lori in California. Who wouldn't love shoes?

These other cookies were going to Garrett in Florida. Presents for the birthday guy!

And the Hearts were going to... both! I hope the cookies arrived safe and that people enjoyed them.

Disco Time!

One of my best friends, Dessie, asked me to make a very special cake for her husband's surprise birthday party. Jon (Dessie's husband) is a wonderful person, very joyful and always with such a positive attitude was turning the big "4" "0" so I wanted to make something unique for him.

The party had a Disco theme so I thought this would be appropriate. Everyone at the party was dressed up and they even had a prize for the best dressed. Neither of us (Matt or I) won mainly because we 'forgot' to put on a costume. Remember the 5 inch high in the sky hair all of us ladies (I mean 'you ladies') used to wear? The party brought back some memories....

The cake was a very moist Chocolate cake with Chocolate Ganache. We covered it in vanilla buttercream and the disco image is made out of chocolate (of course). We used different color sprays to create the colorful design.

We love you Jon!!

Chocolate Torte Anyone?

This is one of those delicious things in life that you just simply can't pass out on. A Chocolate Torte covered in Chocolate Ganache. A bite of this decadent cake and you will feel like in heaven. We made this dessert for a dear friend of ours (and godfather of my daughter Lillie) as a present for his friends at Mercy hospital.

Sweet Cupcakes

Here are some sweet chocolate delight cupcakes that we made for our niece's birthday to take to school. These cupcakes' secret ingredient is coffee, which enhances the chocolate flavor in them. Buttercream tops these delicious treats. We also added a burst of chocolate ganache inside each cupcake.

Baseball Cake and Cookies

My mom and I had fun making this cake. We were asked to make a baseball cake and also cookies favors for a birthday boy turning 6 years old. I thought the baseball would look nice sitting on another cake decorated as grass. I loved how it looked!

Inside the cake we have a delicious golden butter cake covered and decorated with homemade buttercream.

The cookies were vanilla cookies and decorated with royal icing.

Tweety Bird Cake

I almost forgot to post this cute cake. My sister needed a cake for her sister in law, Ana. She looooves Tweety so for the second year in a row we made her a Tweety cake. The figure is made out of royal icing and the cake is covered in buttercream and adorned with fondant flowers. This is a strawberry jello cake and it seems like they were raving about it at the restaurant where they cut the cake. Here's another picture of it.

Train Cake

What do you do when you don't have a train mold to make a train cake? You carve it!

We (my mom and I) had the opportunity to make a train cake for a boy turning 2 years old. I decided to carve the main engine instead of using one of those standing 3D cake molds, that way I could determine the size and the shape of the cake . What was I thinking? Yes it was a lot of work. Yes, I went to sleep at 2:00 am finishing the main engine, but it was worth it.

Here's the main engine. Marble cake on the botton and spice cake on the top. We made chocolate wheels and decorated everything in buttercream. Candy canes and a sugar cone filled with buttercream are part of the decorations.

Here's a picture of some of the other cars. Candy, chocolate lollipops, chocolate wheels and lots of colorful buttercream cover the cakes. Lemon, spice and white cake were chosen.

Here's a picture of another car. We placed chocolate birthday lollipops on top.

And here is the whole train on it's way to the party. I loved it and the client loved it too.

Bernese Mountain Dog Cookies

Check out these puppies!!!

Aren't they adorable? A dear customer came back to us for an order of cookies for a vet that breeds Bernese Mountain Dogs. It was only appropriate to make them cookies with a design of this adorable breed. The picture is made out of royal icing and the cookies are sugar/vanilla cookies.

Being a dog lover myself, I really enjoyed making these cookies and I know that the cookies were enjoyed. See what Sarah wrote back after taking the cookies to the vet:

"Thank you so much for the amazing cookies, Mayra! I just cannot get over how darling each little dog was... such attention to detail! I knew they would be super cute, but they surpassed my expectations by far. You are so talented! Our breeder/vet was thrilled to have them and everyone in her office thought they were awesome."

Noah's Baptism

This is my Noah!

It took us almost one year to finally set a date for my darling son's baptism. On Sunday 15th Noah Matthew was baptised and now I can finally breathe better. I'm a happy mom! Of course I had to make his cake, but I have to tell you that I wasn't very happy with the end result. I thought that it ended up looking more like a combination of a wedding cake and a little girl's baptism cake. It is blue though.... Well, that's what happens when I don't start with a design in my head. At least he had a cake right? Here it is. You decide what it looks like, close your eyes...open them.

The bottom tier cake was a delicious tropical cake with walnuts, pinneaple and coconut and my husband's request, marble cake (chocolate and vanilla). The top tier was orange cake. We filled both cakes with appricot buttercream. Although my preferred way of working is fondant, I decided to cover the cake with buttercream frosting.

We made the crosses with chocolate and outlined with buttercream. I used real flowers on this cake because I was running out of time. I had only a couple of hours of sleep and I had no energy to make real flowers.

We also made cookies to give them as thank you gifts to our family and dear friends. The crosses are also made with chocolate.

Curious George

My best friend's godson was celebrating his first birthday and they wanted to have a Curious George cake. Well, here it is! Inside the cake we have a tropical mix with pinneaple and coconut along with coconut flavored buttercream.

Curious George was made out of chocolate and the cake is covered in buttercream.

Hannah Montana's Guitar

Hannah Montana's guitar cake just went out the door and they liked it, yeah!! I used a picture of HM's real guitar design to make it out of chocolate. Musical chocolate notes surround this cake also. I hope sweet Victoria likes it. This is a fudgy chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream (dad's request to be all chocolate).

Stethoscope Cake

Check out this cake! It was designed for an ob gyn doctor for his birthday. A scrubs design was out of the question because he doesn't really wear them. We thought about other designs, but some of the ideas were not very appropriate. So a stethoscope was sitting on top of a prescription sheet was perfect.

Inside the cake we have mocha cake with chocolate ganache filling and butter chocolate cake with raspberry filling. The cake is covered with our home made MMF (fondant) with a touch of almond flavor.

Cute Monsters Cake

My mom and I had lots of fun this weekend making this cake for one of my dearest friend and my daughter's Godmother. Well, the cake was for her son Abelito (sweet darling boy) on his first birthday! It was a challenge because I wanted it to be perfect, cute and a bit scary.

The final design consisted of chocolate little monsters going on a trick or treating trip. They were surrounded by houses, chocolate made trees and chocolate pumpkins. Ghosts, haunted cats and goblins surrounded the cake. The bottom layer was sweet white cake with chunks of pineapple and coconut brushed with coconut syrup. The layers were filled with vanilla buttercream and hint of pineapple flavor. The top layer was strawberry cake with strawberry buttercream.

We also made sugar cookies with some of the cute monsters from the cake. The monsters are made out of chocolate so it's all edible. Here's my friend Maria and her son Abelito having fun with the cake!

80th Birthday cake

This cake was made for a previous client that was pleased with our work before. Her dad was turning 80 years old and they celebrated with this delicious chocolate cake covered in chocolate buttercream frosting. Matt (hubby) was upset because I didn't cut anything fom the cake... I'm sorry, it came out perfect from the oven!

Cookies for a fundraiser

We made a few cookies for a fundraiser this last Sunday. A big bake sale was organized to repair the dome on the ceiling of the Basilica of Saint John because it was a bit damaged. We didn't think twice about making some treats to help out. My husband Matt participates and is very involved in that church and we love the people there. You can't go wrong with pumpkins.

Check out our little ghosts! Matt didn't really think this was appropriate for church, but I thought that kids would take a bite out of those scary ghosts. My daughter Lillie managed to steal one of these while we were wrapping them. The cookies were cinnamon and vanilla sugar cookies. They were decorated with royal icing and some of the details were fondant and buttercream icing.

Elmo Cake

Last weekend my mom and I had an extremely busy day on Friday as we prepared two special cakes for our dear friends. Yolanda and Monica didn't plan this accordingly and they ended up having both of their kids' parties on the same day! Luckily, one was at 11:00 am and the second one was at 4:30 pm. To us, that meant a busy Friday, tons of buttercream, very few hours of sleep and a really messy kitchen.

Yolanda had an Elmo theme going on so she wanted to celebrate her son's (Nicholas) second birthday with an Elmo cake. She found a design that she liked and gave it to me to recreate the cake. Here's the cake she wanted.

I decided to change the tones to make it more vibrant so we added several bright colors. Nichola's cake was butter chocolate with buttercream frosting and filling. Elmo and the Sesame Street sign were made out of chocolate and I found that Yolanda had a tough time cutting it at the party because she liked it a whole lot. Here's the cake we made for him (Later, I'll find a shot where you can see the entire design).

BTW, we had a lot of fun at the party. Yolanda is really crafty and the table where the cake was sitting was decorated amazingly. She decorated marshmallows and made these beautiful treat bags for the kids. I'll post a picture of their table when she sends me a picture of it.

Mocha Cake

Today we made a delicious three layer mocha cake filled with vanilla buttercream frosting. It was for a young man named Nick turning 25 years old so I thought brown color would be appropriate. To add more flavor, chocolate ganache is drizzled on top of the cake.

Monsters Inc Cake

Mike Wazowski, Sulley's scare assistant from Monsters Inc was the main attraction on this cake. The monster is completely edible since it was made from chocolate. The cake is all chocolate with raspberry filling (yummy combination) and it is covered with buttercream frosting and adorned with fun fondant circles all around.

Along with the main cake, the birthday boy got an additional "smashing cake" so he didn't have to dive into Mike - the monster.

Tania, Saul's mom, ordered his first birthday cake last year from us. It is one of our most popular kid's cakes. Each cake was a different flavor and it was star piped with buttercream. Here's a picture of it.

Boombox Cake

A friend of my daughter Lillie had a birthday and she is into Hannah Montana, her name is Nadia. She didn't really want to have HM's picture on the cake, but wanted to have something about her. He mom Ana mentioned a boombox and we thought it would be a great idea to create it as a cake. Take a look!

I didn't plan on putting a CD player, but then I figured that Nadia turning only 5 years old she wouldn't even know what a tape was. The inside of the cake was chocolate and white with buttercream frosting. The cake was covered with our homemade fondant and we adorned it with stars all around. Nadia loved the cake and her mom commented that it was too pretty to eat.

Carrousel Cake

This new cake was made for a party with a Carnival Theme. We designed a two level Carrousel cake with cute animals made out of chocolate. Lions, giraffes, hippos, tigers, oh my! The bottom cake was lemon and spice cake with vanilla buttercream. The top tier was chocolate and white cake with vanilla buttercream. Kids love that buttercream. The topper consisted of cupcakes and chocolate lollipops.

Along with the cake, we made some cinnamon cookies and we placed some of the chocolate made animals on top of them. Our cookies always come wrapped in cellophan bags and tied with a matching ribbon.

Cookies for Kindermusik

We made lots and lots of cookies for a wonderful lady named Jenn Horak, director of Kindermusik with Piper Pied Studios. Kindermusik is an organization that offers fantastic music classes for kids. My daughter Lillie has been taking classes there since she was 8 months old and she loves it.

The cookie flavors were chocolate, cinnamon and sugar. They were decorated with purple royal icing and the designs were made out of chocolate and fondant.
